NPR’s podcast Code Switch is a fearless conversations about race that you've been waiting for. Hosted by journalists of color, the podcast tackles the subject of race with empathy and humor. They explore how race affects every part of society — from politics and pop culture to history, food and everything in between.
For the first in person podcast event post covid quarantine, the topic was home. Inviting creative Chicago native’s to take place in the conversation, I was asked to create a 3 minute animation to be displayed along Jose Olivarez’s poem reading at the Studebaker Theater in Chicago.
I was to visually interpret what his poem meant to me, not necessarily in the literal sense but rather what do I see when I hear him read his poem.
His poem “Ode to Tortillas” is about being a Mexican American poet and the identity crisis that can come when choosing to be creative outside of the traditional norms.
I chose to focus on the tortilla and how it has humble origins with its ingredients and traditional way of being made, and how it’s now used with both traditional and non-traditional foods.
Was the sole illustrator and animator for the entirety of this project.
